What age range do you serve and when does a youth “age out”?
We support young people ages 18–24 who have “aged out” of foster care (i.e. turned 18 while still in care). Our programs begin at age 18 and continue up to their 24th birthday, providing the bridge from foster care to independent adulthood.
How long can a youth stay in your transitional housing program?
Most participants remain in our transitional housing for 6–12 months, depending on individual needs and progress toward stability goals. Extensions are considered on a case-by-case basis if young adults need extra time to complete school or secure employment.
What are the eligibility requirements?
To qualify, a young adult must:
Be between 18–24 years old
Have been in the Florida foster system (or referred by a licensed provider)
Demonstrate a commitment to the program’s curriculum (life skills, mentoring, etc.)
Agree to program rules around curfews, case meetings, and participation
Is there any cost or rent charged to participants?
No. All program costs (rent, utilities, food assistance, workshops) are covered by donor funding—at zero cost to the youth.
How do you ensure safe, quality housing?
We partner with vetted, licensed landlords and conduct regular on-site inspections. All transitional homes meet Florida building codes, and participants have 24/7 access to on-call staff for emergencies.
How are mentors and staff selected and trained?
Our mentors undergo:
Background checks (including statewide DCF and FBI fingerprinting)
40+ hours of training in trauma-informed care, boundaries, and youth development
Ongoing supervision and professional development to maintain high support standards
How does Double A Helping Hands collaborate with Florida’s Department of Children & Families?
We maintain a formal referral agreement with DCF Region 3 (Miami-Dade/Monroe). Caseworkers can directly refer eligible youth, and we share regular progress reports to ensure continuity of care.
8. What happens when a youth “graduates” from the program?
Graduates join our Alumni Network, which provides:
Quarterly meetups and peer support
Access to job fairs and continued mentorship
Emergency “bridge funds” for unexpected crises
How are donated funds used?
100% of public donations go toward program services: housing stipends, groceries, school supplies, and staff support. Administrative expenses are covered by private foundation grants to ensure transparency and impact.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Double A Helping Hands is a registered 501(c)(3) in Florida. Your gift is fully tax-deductible (EIN: 83-2676112, Registration #CH79707). After donating, you’ll automatically receive a donation letter for your records.
How can businesses or community groups get involved?
You can:
Sponsor a house or cohort (covering rent for a month or more)
Host a life-skills workshop or career panel
Organize a supply drive (furniture, bedding, school supplies)
Become a corporate matching-gift partner to amplify individual donations
Where do you operate?
Our current service area is Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida, with plans to expand statewide as funding allows.
